Should I avoid Halloween candy if I'm serious about seeing results?
Halloween is full of perfectly pre-portioned, tasty little treats!
One or two pieces absolutely won’t derail you.
But here’s the thing—Halloween candy is typically sold in bulk, and having that big bag around can lead to constant nibbling just because it’s there.
If you want to enjoy Halloween candy without going overboard, here are some practical tips to savor the season without sidetracking your goals.
Tips to enjoy Halloween candy AND your goals:
Plan Your Treats in Advance
Decide how many pieces you’ll enjoy each day this week, and then pre-portion them into small Ziploc baggies. You can even label each bag with the day of the week and add a little encouragement (like “Enjoy each bite and power through your day!”). This way, you’re enjoying a little indulgence without mindlessly reaching into the big bag.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Keep the rest of the candy stash out of reach. A high pantry shelf works great—just avoid stashing it in your desk drawer, where boredom or procrastination can make reaching for candy way too easy!
Ask Yourself: Have I Eaten a Full Meal Today?
Sometimes, constant sugar cravings can be a signal from your body that it needs real nourishment. Before diving into candy, check if you've eaten a balanced meal with protein, veggies, and healthy fats. Satisfying meals can reduce sugar cravings and keep you from snacking mindlessly on candy.
Set a ‘Treat Time’ and Stick to It
Decide on a time each day to enjoy your Halloween candy, like right after lunch. Having a designated treat time can prevent impulsive eating and make those sweets feel like a satisfying reward rather than a constant temptation. Plus, savoring candy after you’ve had a balanced meal can help curb cravings and avoid overeating candy!
Check the Nutritional Impact
Here’s a quick look at the nutrition info for some of the most popular chocolate treats:

Notice the difference in serving sizes (numbers of candies) ranging from 2 pieces (e.g., Almond Joys or M&M packages) to 5 pieces (3 Musketeers)!!
Calories per gram of candy are listed in the yellow row, with the lowest calorie candy highlighted in green.
The lowest calorie per gram candy is Milky Way!
Although these chocolate treats are similar nutritionally, ask yourself:
Do I like more hand-to-mouth movement? Then maybe small M&Ms where you can pop ~28 little pieces in your mouth are for you! This might be more realistic than expecting yourself to only have ONE KitKat.
Do I enjoy the unwrapping process and want to unwrap FIVE pieces of candy? maybe 3 Musketeers is for you!
